Etimoloji

Pek çok bilim adamı Ellac'ı Eski Türkçe älik / ilik / ilig ("prens, hükümdar, kral)" benzeri bir sözcükden türetmiştir; bu sözcük *el (bölge) + lä-g (yönetmek, kural koymak) sözcüğünden türemiştir. Bu nedenle ad, kişisel bir addan çok bir unvan gibi görünmektedir.
