Melkon Gürciyan 1859'da şimdiki Elazığ'nin Palu bölgedeki Havav (günümüzdeki Ekinözü, Kovancılar) köyünde doğdu.[3]Palu - Population movements. Houshamadyan.[4]Melkon Gurdjian, dit Hrant. Larousse. O çevredeki Ermeni okuluna gitti. 11 yaşındayken ailesinle birlikte İstanbul'a taşındı. Eğitimine, Üsküdar'daki Jemaran Ermeni Okulunda devam etti. Jemaranı bitirdikten sonra Surp Haç Tıbrevank Ermeni Lisesinde öğretmenlik yaptı.

İstanbula döndükten sonra bir kere daha hapse atılmış ve bu sefer 6 ay yattıktan sonra Kastamonu'ya kaçmayı başarmıştı. Kastamonu'da 10 sene yaşamıştı fakat yazıları bir kez daha yakılmıştı.[1]S. Melkon Gürciyan realist bir yazar olarak sayılır.
